Jackson House Update

As you would be aware from the GM's recent update, the new certificates of title were recently issued for the two allotments that have been sold and a new title issued for the remainder of the golf course land.

We hoped to be in a position to provide a full financial reconciliation in this edition of BTG, however this will now done by separate email when settlement has been completed which is expected to occur over the course of the next week.

The new owners of the house and land allotment have moved into the house under licence as their lease expired on their rental property prior to Easter.

The owners of the vacant land allotment will shortly be lodging plans with the Onkaparinga Council for approval to build their new house.

The Committee of Management have agreed to contribute half costs for external fencing around the two allotments and this is expected to be constructed shortly after settlement.

Environmental Policy and Implementation Plan

The 2023-2028 BGC Strategic Plan includes the following as a component of its mission: "Developing and maintaining the course and its surrounds and providing services to members and visitors in an environmentally responsible manner."  Key actions to   achieve this included developing an Environmental Policy and an Environmental Management Plan for the course.

In February 2025 the Committee of Management approved a BGC Environmental Policy. Subsequent to this an Implementation Plan has been approved in principle. A summary of the policy and Implementation Plan can be accessed (here).

Phil Donaldson, member of the Course Sub Committee, has been instrumental in the development of the Environmental Policy and an Environmental Management Plan and has recently sought feedback from members on the Implementation Plan. If members have any feedback, please provide this on the attached Implementation Plan Feedback Form can be accessed (here) and return it to gm@blackwoodgolf.com.au

A grant from Green Australia Grassroots Grants is being sought to assist the club with the Implementation Plan.

 Annual Volunteer Thank You Function

The Annual Volunteer Thank You Function will be held in the Clubhouse on Thursday May 22nd 2025 from 4pm - 6pm. The Annual Volunteer Thank You Function has been planned to coincide with National Volunteer Week, a week to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the contribution volunteers make to communities. Invitations have been sent to members   who have contributed to the functioning of our club over the past twelve months.

Captain's Call - Peter Schapel

The Course is in great shape for this time of year particularly after such a dry summer and autumn.  Kudos to Steve and the green staff for presenting the course so well.  I have had many comments on how good the course is looking and how true and fast the greens have been over the last few months.  These comments have come from our own members as well as the visiting golfers including the various pennant teams who have played at Blackwood during the recent pennant season.

Meet the Course Superindendent - Steve Pellatt

A man of few words - until you get to know him, and a man of great energy and passion for the course. Steve Pellatt - Course Superintendent at BGC for the last 20 years. Originally from Portsmouth, Hampshire, Steve and his wife arrived in Australia on Australia Day 1998. They wanted a better quality of life for both themselves and their kids and have never looked back. Husband, father and now grandfather of five, plus an extra 3 step grandchildren, Steve came to BGC as an assistant superintendent from Stirling Golf Club in 2005. He had been at Stirling for 6 years. After 2 years at BGC, Steve took over as Course Superintendent and has been in the role ever since, growing the staff to 6 full time staff members, including himself and looking to employ an apprentice very soon.  What are the most significant changes that Steve has seen over his time at BGC? Bunkers. Yes Bunkers. Most members may not understand that when Steve first started at BGC, bunkers habitually filled with water every time it rained and had to be drained by hand, Over the years, sufficient drainage has been installed so that bunkers drain properly. This is bearing in mind that an average year of rain at BGC yields 850mls\. The wettest Steve has known is 1400mls  - a lot of rain whichever way you look at it.

The other most significant change has been the installation of the new irrigation system, the benefits of which won't be fully seen until next summer. In Steve's opinion, and that of many members and visitors is that the course is the best it has ever been. Fairways are thick and lush, and the greens are consistently good, despite the incredibly dry and hot summer, and autumn. BGC has one very big advantage over other clubs in that it has water - not just any water but high quality water. The new irrigation is estimated to save 15 man hours per week of hand watering, moving hoses and generally fixing old irrigation pumps and leaks. This is 15 hours, which in a year's time, can be spent on other projects on the course. And Steve always has another project in mind, as the course, like a house, needs ongoing care and maintenance on a continual cycle. It never stops and is a 365 day a year job with only Christmas Day off for staff. Steve's pet hates - bunkers not being raked properly; divots not being filled and pitch marks left unattended.

Holidays - lots of caravaning, a recent trip to Sri Lanka and maybe a trip to Japan in the future with a side trip to the Great Wall of China.

Steve, we sincerely thank you for your dedication, hard work and love of BGC. Steve believes he has the best office in the world. He also believes he doesn't work a day in his life as he has the best job in the world.

Course Report- Steve Pellatt – Course   Superintendent

The 15mm of much-needed rain that fell on March 20th boosted our total for the year up to 20.5mm, which is only @23% of our year-to-date average (87.5mm). There is still no significant rain events forecast for the foreseeable future and the drought continues with no sign of breaking yet. Read the full report here.

Our volunteers have been invited to an appreciation night on Thursday night (4-6pm) on May 22. We hope to see as many of our volunteers there as possible.
