Annual General Meeting - 28th August

Preparations are underway for the Club’s 2025 Annual General Meeting, to be held on Thursday 28 August at 7:00pm in the Clubhouse.

A formal Notice of Election has been issued to members, outlining the nomination and election process for Office Bearers and Committee positions. A number of current Committee members have confirmed their intention to stand, and I encourage all members to familiarise themselves with the process if considering participating in this important annual governance milestone.

If you have any questions regarding the AGM or nominations, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Irrigation Project Completion & Remedial Works Plan

With the irrigation upgrade now fully completed, our focus has shifted to restoring the playing surfaces and surrounding areas affected during installation. We’re aware that a number of these areas remain in need of attention, and we appreciate members’ patience as we work through this next phase.

Recent heavy rainfall has presented additional challenges, washing out trench lines and limiting our ability to stabilise and repair damaged turf. However, a comprehensive audit has already been undertaken by the course team, identifying all areas requiring remedial action.

The restoration program will commence in early spring when weather conditions become more favourable for turf growth and surface recovery. Key works will include:

  • Re-sodding areas where turf has died or not taken
  • Re-filling and compacting washed-out trenches
  • Lifting and re-levelling sunken sods and sprinkler heads
  • Sanding and seeding bare or compacted patches
  • Addressing any construction-related defects in coordination with Belair Turf Management

These works will be delivered using a combination of Blackwood Golf Club staff, volunteers, and contractors. While winter has delayed some progress, please be assured that the planning is thorough, and we are fully committed to restoring all impacted areas to a high standard over the coming months.

Thank you for your continued support as we transition from construction to regeneration.

Pace of Play Tip – Be Ready to Play, Not Just Watch

One of the easiest ways to keep a good rhythm on the golf course is to be proactively ready while others are playing.

While your playing partners take their shots:

  • Assess your distance

  • Choose your club

  • Make your practice swing

This way, when it’s your turn, you're stepping straight into your shot — not starting your routine from scratch. Every small moment saved adds up over 18 holes and helps everyone enjoy a smoother round.

Wet Weather Warrior of the Week

This week’s fearless recipient is none other than Jonathon Weaver, spotted early Sunday morning attempting what can only be described as a high-risk, low-reward masterpiece from the banks of the 12th. Channeling the spirit of Kari Heikkonen’s legendary waterlogged moment at Kooyonga in the 1977 SA Pennant Final, Jonathon bravely waded in, took aim... and, after the splashdown, calmly retrieved his ball and accepted the penalty.

Ambitious? Absolutely.
Successful? Not exactly.
Entertaining? Without question.

Well played, Jonathon – your may never feel your toes again, but your place in Blackwood lore is secured!

A New Nest for Our Feathered Friend

Many members will be familiar with our resident goose, who has become something of a local celebrity around the Club in recent months. We’re pleased to share that she has now found a safe and happy new home at a menagerie in Norton Summit.

Club member Jim Stratmann kindly helped source the new home and played a key role—alongside myself and several other members—in the delicate mission of capturing and transporting her safely. A big thank you to Jim for his care and initiative.

As part of the arrangement, the menagerie has agreed to provide occasional updates and photos so we can all continue to enjoy her adventures from afar. Here is the first one of Gladys and a few new friends!

It’s comforting to know she’s in good hands and will continue to be well looked after in a peaceful setting.

Art in the Atrium – SALA Festival Exhibition | 3–27 August

Blackwood Golf Club is once again proud to host Art in the Atrium as part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival, Australia’s largest open-access visual arts celebration held every August. This year’s exhibition will feature works from 30 talented artists, including several first-time exhibitors at the Club.

We warmly invite all members, guests, and visitors to attend the official opening on Sunday, 3 August at 2pm, with live music and Jericho wines available at special SALA prices. It promises to be a wonderful afternoon celebrating creativity, community, and local talent.

The exhibition is open daily from 11am–4pm, and we encourage you to come along, enjoy the artwork, and support this vibrant initiative.

A heartfelt thank you to the participating artists and the many dedicated club volunteers whose efforts make this exhibition possible each year. Your support brings our clubhouse to life in the most colourful and inspiring way.

Callaway Promo Champ – Con Bags a Beauty!

A big congratulations to Con Brauer, who’s walked away as the lucky winner of the Pro Shops recent Callaway Ball Promotion, which ran through June and July. Con’s prize? A very slick, very flash OGIO Silencer cart bag – the kind of gear that turns heads before you’ve even teed off.

Matt would like to extend a huge thank you to all the members who supported the promo – your enthusiasm (and ball-buying prowess) didn’t go unnoticed.

And for those who missed out, don’t despair… we've been informed  there's a Bridgestone Ball Promotion teeing off next month. Keep your eyes peeled and your swing at the ready – you could be the next winner!

Open Tipping Comp – And the Champion Golfer of the Year is… Matt Edmonds?

In scenes not too dissimilar to Royal Troon (minus the rain, galleries, and prize money), our very own Pro Shop maestro Matt Edmonds has claimed victory in Denty’s Open Tipping Competition.

Out of 20 hopefuls, Matt was the only one to back world number one Scottie Scheffler – and with his tash and effortless swagger, we’re beginning to wonder if Matt’s actually trying to be him. His prediction of -10 wasn’t quite on the money (Scottie ran away with it at -17), but close enough to earn the win and a cheeky comparison to his doppelgänger.

Matt took home a dozen ProV1x balls and a fresh FootJoy Weathersof glove – no doubt hoping some of Scheffler’s magic rubs off on him in the next staff comp.

Well played Matt – and to the rest of us, it's time to dust off the crystal balls and do better next major!

General Manager - August Leave

As many are aware, I will be taking a family holiday throughout August and will return to the Club on Monday, 2nd September. This period of leave was planned well in advance and taken into account during my recruitment process for the General Manager role, late last year.

During this time, the Club remains in very capable hands. Day-to-day operations will be overseen by our excellent office team, with both Jo and Sarah providing continuity and support. Sarah is authorised to act on General Manager matters where required. The Jo and Sarah combination managed the Club admirably during the transitional period prior to my commencement, and I’m confident they’ll do so again.

While General Manager updates may be less frequent over the coming weeks, any important communications—particularly those relating to the upcoming Annual General Meeting—will continue to be issued through the Committee of Management.

With the usual superb support of our experienced Sub-Committees and dedicated staff, I’m fully confident the Club is in good hands until my return. Thank you all for your continued support.
