Presidents Message - Chris Lemm

Irrigation Upgrade Completed

After just over three years from commencement, the last sods of turf have been laid to complete circa $1.73 million irrigation upgrade of our golf course - the biggest and most expensive project undertaken by the club in many years. The project had its genesis in late 2021 when the very poor state of the irrigation infrastructure had become apparent. The Committee of Management engaged Adam Gunn, member and irrigation specialist, to develop a plan and costings for an irrigation upgrade. At a Special General Meeting in January 2023, the Committee of Management put forward a resolution to enable the irrigation upgrade to proceed which was comprehensively endorsed by members. A contract was signed with Belair Turf Management and the project commenced on May 22nd 2023. The project was to be undertaken over three years with BGC course staff and volunteers assisting BTM with some elements to reduce costs.

It is very pleasing to report the project;

  • Met all agreed timelines
  •  Involved very few cost variations
  •  Included the addition of irrigating the practice fairway
  • Has been completed within the allocated budget
The project presented its challenges, especially in the first year with Belair Turf Management having to endure months of record rainfall, making working conditions very difficult and impeding progress.

There are many to thank for this state of the art irrigation system, that will ensure the quality of our golf course for many years to come:

  • The Financial Advisory Panel members who assisted the Committee of Management in developing a financial plan for the irrigation upgrade.
  • Members for voting to undertake the irrigation project and for their patience and understanding with the irrigation works over the past three years.
  • The many course volunteers who have assisted with the project, ensuring course staff could undertake daily course maintenance work.
  • Members of the Irrigation Project Steering Committee for their oversight of the project.
  • Steve Pellatt, Course Superintendent and all course staff who worked closely with Belair Turf Management staff to complete the project whilst undertaking the normal work required to present a quality course for members.
  • Belair Turf Management for completing the project on time and within the allocated budget. Their staff worked methodically and professionally and as a very cohesive team with our course staff and volunteers.
  • Adam Gunn, Project Manager who worked closely with Belair Turf Management and Steve Pellat throughout the project to ensure it was completed on time and within budget. Our club is indebted to Adam not only for his experience, knowledge and skills in developing the irrigation plan and managing the project, but also for his passion and determination to ensure the club has an irrigation system that will meet its needs for many years.
Our members can now look forward to the benefits of the irrigation upgrade. This will not only include improved greens, surrounds, fairways and roughs, but also other improvements that our course staff can work on in lieu of having to address irrigation issues

Captains Call - Peter Schapel

Great to see the irrigation now completed and the course back in normal rotation.  Thanks to Steve Pellatt and the course staff, Belair Turf Management, project manager Adam Gunn and all the volunteers who helped bring this massive project to a successful, timely and on budget conclusion.

I also thank and commend all members for their patience and support through this challenging project.

Course Report - Steve Pellat Course Superintendent

Since the 1 January 2024, 14 of the last 17 months have been below average for rainfall, which for us here at Blackwood is highly unusual to experience such an extended period with low rainfall. One of the many impacts of the dry conditions that we are experiencing is that in my time here, we have not watered fairways as late into autumn as we did this year to freshen up the course prior to this year’s Vardon event. For the full report see here

Outstanding Volunteers

National Volunteer Week was held recently in May with the theme ‘Connecting Communities’. The Club has a tradition of volunteering and is always greatly appreciative of all the volunteers who so generously give up their time, energy and efforts to help the Club. At the Volunteer Appreciation evening, on 22 May, 2 volunteers who have given so much of their highly valuable expertise and time were awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award – Andrew Young and John Bray. Both richly deserve these awards.  Read the details of Andrew’s and John’s contributions here.

SALA - Art in the Atrium

It’s on again – and bigger and better than ever. Our annual SALA exhibition will run from Sunday 3  - 28 August  with the official opening on Sunday 3 August at 2pm.

This year, as well as our very talented own member artists, we have a group of artists from Coromandel Valley who will be exhibiting their art work. We very much look forward to including them in our exhibition this year.

The popular Member’s Choice competition will be running again this year. So once the exhibition commences, view the gallery and choose a piece of artwork of your choice and you may very well win $50 on the bar.

Photo Competition

So many fabulous photos have been submitted over the last month. Thank you to everyone who has taken photos of our gorgeous course. It was a very difficult decision to choose a winner. Congratulations to Helen Aylett for her stunning photo which has a perfect refection of one of the dams and a cloudless blue sky. Helen wins a couple of bottles of wine. Reminder – ALL entries, regardless of whether they have won a monthly prize or not, go into the final draw for the prize of $100 on the bar at the end of the year.

Vale - Laurence Marshall

It was very sad to hear that Laurence Marshall passed away on June 12th. Laurence was a member of Blackwood Golf Club for 28 years. He loved his golf and the golf club. Laurence served on the Board (now Committee of Management) and was the Chair of the Finance Sub Committee. He made a substantial contribution to the club in these roles.

Laurence was a true gentleman, who was highly regarded and a good friend to many of our members. He will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Sheryl and family.

Between the Greens

November 2023

Why make just one hole in one, when you can make two - and both in 7 days? This must be a record!!!!! Congratulations to Laurence Marshall on his 2 hole in ones. Most of us are still looking to make one hole in one, so an extraordinary achievement Laurence.

Bits and Pieces

Have you noticed the beautiful edging on the putting green near the flagpole? So neat and tidy and matching the other edging on the practice area and on the 7 tee block. Our hero volunteers – Nick Szabo and Brett Edwards have been working all week. Champions both. A huge thank you much for all your work in less than sublime conditions
